Hard Water and Your Bath Fittings: Maintenance Tips That Actually Work

Hard Water and Your Bath Fittings

Hard water is one of the biggest reasons bath fittings look worn out well before their actual lifespan is up. The good news is that most of the damage is preventable with a five-minute routine, not an expensive water softener.

Why limescale forms

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. As water evaporates off a chrome or steel surface, those minerals are left behind as the chalky white residue you see around nozzles, taps and shower heads. Left alone, it clogs nozzle holes and dulls the finish permanently.

A simple weekly routine

For anti-clog nozzles

Shower heads with silicone anti-clog nozzles are much easier to maintain — you can usually just rub the nozzles with a thumb to dislodge any mineral build-up, without needing to soak or scrub at all.

When to consider a filter

If your water supply is especially hard, an inline shower filter (fitted between the wall outlet and the shower arm) can meaningfully extend the life of your fittings and is worth the small additional cost.
